Are You Too Stuck in your Diet?

August 21, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

stuck in weight lossThe other day I got a question from a person who was stuck in her weight loss.
She follows a strict calorie and exercises but still she feels she is not losing weight.

I’ve always liked .
It is just so logical; making sure that you eat and drink less calories than you use.

But to lose weight by counting calories is not all that straight forward.

One of the biggest myths in weight loss is:
If you eat very little you will lose weight!

The risks of only focusing on eating very few calories are:

  • Your body might think your starving and lower its metabolism.
  • You lose weight but only muscles and water.
  • You stuff yourself with toxins that only increase your carvings.

The result is that you will feel bad. You get under nourished but you don’t lose weight. You will lose muscles. After your diet you will gain weight fast as your body will want to stock up on fat for the next period of starvation.

To get a real, healthy and PERMANENT weight loss I find that there are 3 E-factors to success:
Eat REAL food
Eat often
Exercise

Eat Real food
Products that are labeled with no-fat, low-fat, diet, no-sugar added etc are products that make me very skeptical. I always read the ingredients and I have never found a single one of these products that are healthy.
Low fat products are filled with sugar.
No sugar products are filled in artificial sweeteners.
And they are all filled with synthetic substances and toxins that you don’t want in your body.

Eat often
The usual 3 meals a day is not enough if you are cutting your diet. The risk of falling for carvings in between meals is just too big. Waiting long before you eat also increases the risk of overeating and it is bad of your metabolism.
By eating 5-6 smaller meals each day you can keep your metabolism high and you keep your sugar levels in control. You will also shrink your stomach which is great to avoid gaining weight again after you stop focusing on your diet.

Exercise
Exercise makes your weight loss much easier. It increases your metabolism, burns calories and builds muscles that will burn even more calories. On top of that, the exercise have a great effect on your mind. It makes you feel healthier and happier. It removes stress and tension.
And it does not have to be such a big thing. Go for a walk in the sunshine or play with your kids in the park. Even housework burns calories. It’s about using your body throughout the whole day.

Calorie counting is still great. Keep on counting! But use it as a tool to keep the track on the unhealthy food. If you love lattes then it is really important to know how many calories a latte really contains.

ON TOP OF the counting eat at much fresh, raw fruits and vegetables as you possibly can. Don’t bother counting how many calories they contain. I don’t think that anyone has ever become fat from eating too many fresh, raw fruits and vegetables.

So this is what I recommend to loose weight:

  1. Eat as much fresh, raw fruits and vegetables as you can.
  2. Count the calories on everything else you eat.
  3. Eat 5-6 smaller meals each day.
  4. Move your body as much and as often as you can.

This way you will feed you body and keep you metabolism high all day. In return, this time, you WILL loose that extra weight.

Loose over 2 pounds a week by changing bread

September 27, 2007 by · 2 Comments

I just read about a woman who lost 90 pounds in nine months.
Only by changing her breakfast habits and walking.

She started to eat a breakfast containing healthy , fruits and vegetables. And the pounds just disappeared.

The bread you eat really makes a difference.
I friend of mine had a similar experience a couple of years ago. She had been gaining weight slowly but surely for years. I don’t really want to say it but she had become fat.

By changing bread she not only reversed the trend. It became her solution to serious, permanent . I don’t know how much she lost but I can tell you that it was a total transformation. She looked great.

What is so bad about bread?

We’ve all heard about and glycemic index. In a based on food with you don’t eat fast carbohydrates. The fast carbohydrates in in for example white flour are devastating. They give you a blood sugar rush. Every blood sugar high is followed by an as extreme low. With this blood sugar low you need energy again. FAST!

By starting you day with white bread or sugary cereal you make sure that your day will be full of blood sugar highs and lows. And the following sugar cravings.

White flour is highly processed. It has lost most of its natural nutrients. Sure often its enriched but that is just not good enough. Your body needs nutrients. It doesn’t matter how much food you stuff in your stomach. If there is not enough nutrients you will soon be hungry again.

White flour is used in many products because it is cheap and has a very long shelf life. Not because it is healthy.

So how do you pick healthy bread?

I wish it was as easy as saying whole grain but it’s not. Most contains just a little bit of whole grain and lost of cheap white flour.

Preferably your bread should contain NO white flour. At least the whole grain should be listed before of the white flour in the ingredients label. Then you know that there is more whole grain than white flour.

4 things to think of when you choose bread:

  1. It should contain mainly whole grain (check the ingredients label)
  2. Try other grains than wheat; rye, spelt, barley.
  3. Healthy bread is heavy, lift it up a feel.
  4. Color is not enough. Brown bread is not equal to healthy.

Healthy bread is more expensive to buy. But I seriously wonder if it isn’t cheaper in the long run. You need a lot less to get full and you stay full much longer.
Apparently barley is especially good if you want to avoid snacking.

Back to my friend who lost so much weight by changing bread. I told you how great she looked.
Well, she still looks great. Years later she has not put on any weight.
That’s what we need to and keep it off.

The great this about this way loosing weight is that you do not need to follow a diet. Continue eating as usual. Just buy healthier bread. It is sooo easy.
